ACCM accreditation explained

What ACCM is, how its status labels work, which Caribbean medical schools it has accredited, and how to verify status directly.

Short answer: ACCM (Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine) is a WFME-recognized accrediting body for international medical schools. AUC, St. Matthew's University, MUA, and UMHS are among Caribbean schools it has accredited. Status and term length vary — always check the ACCM assessed-programmes list directly.

What is ACCM?

ACCM is an independent international accrediting commission for colleges of medicine. Unlike CAAM-HP, which focuses on CARICOM Caribbean states, ACCM operates internationally and has accredited programs across the Caribbean and beyond.

ACCM is WFME-recognized. This matters because ECFMG and many residency programs require that a student's medical school hold accreditation from a WFME-recognized agency at the time of graduation. See the WFME Recognition Status list for the current status.

Common error: Saba University is often listed as "ACCM-accredited." This is incorrect. Saba is accredited by NVAO (Dutch-Flemish), not ACCM. See Saba school page.

How to verify ACCM status yourself

  1. Open accredmed.org/accredited-medical-schools-international-medical-school-accreditation/
  2. Read the school's exact status label and the stated term end date.
  3. Note the "as of" date or last update shown on the ACCM page.
  4. Check the school's own accreditation page to see if their copy matches.
  5. If anything conflicts, treat the ACCM primary list as authoritative.

Provisional vs. full accreditation

"Provisional Accreditation" is a meaningful distinction — it is time-limited and subject to review. It does not carry the same weight as full accreditation for:

  • ECFMG eligibility confirmation
  • Residency application vetting by programs
  • Certain state licensing boards

If a school you are researching holds only provisional ACCM accreditation, investigate whether that status will be converted to full before your expected graduation year. ACSOM received ACCM Provisional Accreditation in November 2025 — verify its current status directly.

What ACCM accreditation does not guarantee

  • Title IV / FAFSA eligibility — that is a US Dept of Education determination
  • U.S. state licensing board approval — check each state
  • Canadian provincial licensing — check each province
  • ECFMG pathway eligibility for your specific application year

See Title IV and Caribbean schools and ECFMG / U.S. pathway.
