CAAM-HP accreditation explained

What CAAM-HP is, what it accredits, how to read its status labels, and which Caribbean medical schools are on its assessed-programs list.

Short answer: CAAM-HP (Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions) is a WFME-recognized regional accrediting body. Its assessed-programs list is the primary source for CAAM-HP status — not a school's brochure. As of our last verification, Ross University and American University of Antigua carry "Accredited with Conditions" status; St. George's University voluntarily withdrew in January 2021.

What is CAAM-HP?

CAAM-HP is the regional accrediting authority for medical and health professions education programs in the Caribbean. It was established under the auspices of CARICOM and operates under standards aligned with global accreditation norms. WFME recognized CAAM-HP, which matters for ECFMG and residency eligibility. See WFME Recognition Status for the current recognition list.

CAAM-HP's jurisdiction covers programs in CARICOM member and associate member states. It is not the only accreditor for Caribbean MD programs — ACCM, NVAO, and GMDC also operate in the region. A school not on the CAAM-HP list may be accredited by a different body.

What CAAM-HP statuses mean

Status label (as published)Definition
AccreditedFull CAAM-HP accreditation; no stated conditions
Accredited with ConditionsAccredited, but specific conditions were attached. The school must address them by a deadline or face review.
Provisional AccreditationTime-limited status granted to newer programs; may progress to full or lapse
Candidacy / ApplicantEarliest process stage — not accreditation
Not AccreditedCAAM-HP applied its standards and did not grant accreditation
Voluntarily WithdrawnSchool exited the process; listing removed
On ProbationSerious concerns; accreditation is at risk

Never soften "Accredited with Conditions" to "Accredited." The conditions label is agency language and must be preserved in any citation. See what "accredited with conditions" means.

The following entries are drawn from our registry, verified against the CAAM-HP assessed programs list. Open the primary source before relying on any status:

Note: SGU has GMDC accreditation (WFME-recognized), which is its primary accreditor. The CAAM-HP withdrawal does not mean SGU is "unaccredited" — it means CAAM-HP is not its active accreditor.

How to verify CAAM-HP status yourself

  1. Open caam-hp.org/programs/ — this is the authoritative source.
  2. Look for the school name and read the exact status label published.
  3. Check the date of last update on that page.
  4. Cross-reference with the school's own accreditation page and see if the dates and labels match.
  5. If any mismatch exists, treat the CAAM-HP list as authoritative.

Do not rely on screenshots, third-party directories, or brochures. CAAM-HP updates its list after each assessment cycle, and status can change.

A school that is ACCM-accredited is not automatically CAAM-HP accredited, and vice versa. They are separate accrediting bodies with different governance and standards.

Why CAAM-HP matters for ECFMG and residency

ECFMG's eligibility standards increasingly require that a student's medical school have accreditation from a WFME-recognized body at the time of graduation. CAAM-HP is WFME-recognized. If your school holds CAAM-HP accreditation (including with conditions), this generally satisfies the WFME-recognition requirement — but:

  • Confirm the ECFMG eligibility page for your application year: requirements can change.
  • "Accredited with Conditions" is still CAAM-HP accreditation — it is not disqualifying on its own, but confirm with ECFMG.
  • CAAM-HP status at time of your graduation is what matters — not status at time of enrollment.
