Short answer: WFME (World Federation for Medical Education) recognizes accrediting bodies — not individual schools. CAAM-HP, ACCM, NVAO, and GMDC are all WFME-recognized as of our last verification. WFME recognition of your school's accreditor is increasingly required by ECFMG for certification. Always verify on the official WFME Recognition Status list.

What is WFME?
The World Federation for Medical Education is a global body that sets standards for medical education and runs a recognition program for accrediting agencies. WFME does not directly accredit medical schools — it assesses whether accrediting bodies meet its standards for quality and independence.
When a school says "WFME recognized," they are almost certainly referring to the WFME recognition status of their accreditor, not a direct WFME assessment of the school itself.

Why WFME recognition matters
Since 2023–2024, ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) has strengthened requirements for certification eligibility. The current ECFMG policy requires that students graduating from medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada have their school's accreditation from a WFME-recognized accrediting body.
This means:
- If your accreditor is not WFME-recognized, ECFMG may not certify you, blocking the U.S. residency pathway.
- WFME recognition status can change — an accreditor that is recognized today may lose recognition, or an unrecognized body may gain it.
Check the current ECFMG eligibility page for your expected graduation year, not just enrollment year. Requirements that apply when you graduate are what matter.
See ECFMG eligibility documentation.
Caribbean accreditors and WFME recognition (registry view)

| IAAR | Verify directly | ACSOM, All Saints University (per school claims) |
Always verify WFME recognition yourself at wfme.org/accreditation/recognition-status/. This table reflects our last verification; WFME updates its list independently.

IAAR — verify before relying on it
Some Caribbean schools cite IAAR (International Accreditation Agency for Recognized Registrations) as their accreditor. Students should:
- Check whether IAAR appears on the current WFME Recognition Status list.
- Check whether ECFMG explicitly accepts IAAR-accredited schools for certification eligibility.
- Contact ECFMG directly if unclear.
Do not assume IAAR WFME recognition without checking the current list.
WFME recognition vs. school accreditation — the hierarchy
WFME recognizes → Accrediting bodies (CAAM-HP, ACCM, NVAO, GMDC, ...)
Accrediting bodies accredit → Individual medical schools
A school that says "our accreditor is WFME-recognized" is correctly describing the chain. A school that says "we are WFME-recognized" is using imprecise language that may mislead — there is no direct WFME school-level certification.
What happens if WFME recognition is revoked?
If WFME revokes recognition of an accrediting body:
- Schools accredited only by that body may become ineligible for ECFMG certification.
- Students already enrolled face potential disruption to their U.S. licensure pathway.
- ECFMG has published guidance on transition periods in past policy changes — check the current ECFMG policy for any grandfathering provisions.
This is a real risk for programs accredited by less-established bodies.
How to verify WFME recognition yourself
- Open wfme.org/accreditation/recognition-status/
- Find the accrediting body by name.
- Note the recognition status and any conditions or expiry dates.
- Cross-check with ECFMG eligibility — ECFMG may have additional requirements beyond WFME recognition alone.
