Which Caribbean medical schools are accredited?

A full-list framing of Caribbean MD program accreditation by body — CAAM-HP, ACCM, NVAO, GMDC — with status notes and links to the live registry.

Short answer: Several are — but "accredited" is not a single status, and the answer differs by accrediting body. The only reliable way to answer the question for a specific school is to open the agency's own published list on the day you need it.

The four main accreditors students encounter

AccreditorAbbreviationWFME recognizedPrimary list URL
Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health ProfessionsCAAM-HPYescaam-hp.org/programs

A school can appear on one list and not on another. Having an ACCM listing does not mean CAAM-HP accreditation, and vice versa. Verify each body separately.

How to read accreditation status

Use the agency's own language — do not soften or upgrade:

Agency labelMeaningCommon misread
AccreditedFull accreditation, conditions not statedAssumed permanent — not true
Accredited with ConditionsAccredited but conditions attachedOften treated the same as clean "accredited"
Provisional accreditationTime-limitedTreated as full accreditation
Not AccreditedAgency did not grant accreditationSometimes omitted from school-facing copy
Voluntarily withdrawnSchool exited the processMisread as still accredited
Provisional / CandidacyEarly-stage onlyOften labelled "in the process" — not accredited

See what "accredited with conditions" means for a deeper walk-through.

WFME recognition and why it matters

The WFME recognizes accreditors, not schools directly. ECFMG's eligibility standards (as of 2024 and onward) increasingly require that a school's accreditor appear on the WFME Recognition Status list. CAAM-HP, ACCM, NVAO and GMDC are all WFME-recognized as of our last check — but verify directly before relying on it for application purposes.

See WFME recognition and Caribbean schools for more detail.

Big 4 — quick reference

The "Big 4" programs most commonly discussed are SGU, Ross, AUC, and Saba:

  • SGU — GMDC accredited (through 2030); CAAM-HP voluntarily withdrawn (2021). See SGU school page.
  • Ross — CAAM-HP accredited with conditions. See Ross school page.
  • AUC — ACCM accredited (to Dec 31, 2027). See AUC school page.
  • Saba — NVAO positive peer review; formal renewal besluit pending. See Saba school page.

Compare them side by side on the Big-4 compare page.

What accreditation does not guarantee

Accreditation does not by itself guarantee:

  • U.S. residency placement
  • Title IV federal loan eligibility — that is a separate US Dept of Education determination
  • Licensure in a specific U.S. state or Canadian province
  • ECFMG pathway eligibility for your application year

Check each item separately. See Title IV and Caribbean schools and ECFMG/U.S. pathway.

Primary sources — always verify directly

  1. CAAM-HP assessed programs list
  2. ACCM assessed programmes list
  3. NVAO public decisions database
  4. WFME Recognition Status
  5. ECFMG eligibility
  6. U.S. Dept of Education foreign school eligibility

Next steps

  1. Open the accreditation registry — one row per decision, with source URLs
  2. Open each school's entity page and click through to the primary agency list
  3. Re-check yourself before applying — decisions change at agency meetings
  4. See how to compare schools
