Cost of Caribbean medical school (how to read COA)

How to estimate cost of attendance for Caribbean MD programs using primary tuition schedules — without undated brochure numbers.

Short answer: Total cost of attendance (COA) is usually tuition + fees + living + travel + exams + application cycles, across basic sciences and clinical years. Published "tuition only" figures understate the real bill. Use the school's official schedule for the year you would enroll, and stamp the date you checked.

Why secondary sites get this wrong

Lead-gen pages often paste a single tuition number with no year, no fees, and no living estimate. Our registry refuses to invent dollar amounts: Zod validation requires a costSourceUrl whenever we publish a cost summary (methodology).

Until a school JSON has a cited schedule, entity pages say: see the official tuition page and show lastVerified.

What is actually in a Caribbean medical school COA?

  1. Tuition — per semester/term for basic sciences; clinical-year rates often differ significantly
  2. Mandatory fees — lab, insurance, technology, exam prep bundles if required
  3. Housing & food — island campus costs versus clinical city costs (U.S. cities typically run higher)
  4. Travel — flights home, between campuses, and to clinical sites
  5. Exams & applications — USMLE/NBME fees, ERAS application, Step 2 CS (when required), travel to interviews
  6. Aid — Title IV eligibility is school/country-specific; our Title IV field is Yes/No/Unknown only when we have a basis

A simple COA worksheet

Use the interactive cost calculator for a rough annual total (tuition × terms + monthly living × 12). Defaults stay blank — we do not invent tuition. Then confirm the official schedule for your entry year.

Title IV vs sticker price

Federal Direct Loans (when available) change cash flow; they do not make a school "cheaper" in total COA. Confirm participation on:

Not on an undated blog.

Examples in this registry with Title IV marked Yes (still re-verify): SGU, Ross, AUC, Saba, AUA. Others may be Unknown or No.

How does COA differ between basic sciences and clinical years?

Tuition rates often step up materially during clinical rotations. For example, a school may charge ~$20–25k/term for basic sciences and ~$30k/term for clerkships. Housing costs also shift from a Caribbean island campus to a U.S. clinical city, which is typically more expensive. Neither figure is universal — verify the school's official fee schedule for your entry cohort.

Compare without fake precision

Use Compare for accreditation and Title IV side-by-side, then open each school's official tuition page for dollars. Prefer the accreditation registry when the question is "which are accredited?" — cost and accreditation are different jobs.

Cited figures in the registry

Year-stamped cost summaries appear only when pulled from primary schedules with costSourceUrl and costYearLabel. Until a school has that citation, treat any third-party "average Caribbean med school cost" list as unverified.

Primary sources for cost research

  1. Each school's official tuition/fees page — linked from every school profile
  2. U.S. Department of Education foreign school financial aid
  3. AAMC MSAR — useful for U.S. school comparison; Caribbean schools are typically not listed
  4. ECFMG examination fees — USMLE/ECFMG cost component
  5. ERAS application service — residency application cost component
