Caribbean medical schools for Canadian students

Key considerations for Canadian students exploring Caribbean MD programs: provincial licensing, MCCQE, CARMS matching, financing, and accreditation requirements.

Page last reviewed 2026-11-03

Short answer: Canadian students can and do attend Caribbean medical schools, but the pathway back to Canadian practice is narrow and highly competitive. Provincial licensing bodies (Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons) set individual IMG requirements, CARMS matching for Canadian residency positions is highly restricted for IMGs, and Canadian federal student loans generally do not cover foreign programs. Verify every requirement with the provincial body before enrolling.

The Canadian IMG pathway is not the same as the U.S. pathway

Most Caribbean school marketing focuses on USMLE and U.S. residency pathways. Canadian students considering these programs need to evaluate a different set of criteria:

  • MCCQE Part I and II — Canadian licensing exams (not USMLE)
  • CARMS matching — Canada's residency matching system, with limited positions for IMGs
  • Provincial licensing requirements — each province's College of Physicians and Surgeons sets its own rules for IMGs
  • LMCC (Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada) — requires passing both MCCQE parts and completing residency

U.S. USMLE pass rates and U.S. residency match statistics from Caribbean schools do not predict Canadian outcomes.

Provincial licensing for IMGs

Each Canadian province independently sets requirements for international medical graduates (IMGs). There is no single national standard. Generally, you will need:

  • An MD from a recognized institution (recognition criteria vary by province)
  • MCCQE Part I pass
  • Assessment of training equivalency
  • A residency position in Canada (through CARMS or provincial streams)

Key bodies to contact:

ProvinceLicensing body
OntarioCollege of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
British ColumbiaCollege of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC)
AlbertaCollege of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
QuebecCollège des médecins du Québec (CMQ)

Contact the relevant College directly — policies change, and each body's IMG assessment criteria differ.

CARMS and IMG competition

CARMS (Canadian Resident Matching Service) runs the residency match. Caribbean IMG statistics for Canadian residency are not publicly disaggregated by school. What is known:

  • IMG positions in CARMS are a small fraction of total positions
  • Most IMGs who match Canadian residency positions do so in less competitive specialties and provinces
  • Having completed U.S. clinical electives does not substitute for Canadian LME (Licentiate Medical Education) rotations, which some provincial programs require

Do not assume that attending a school with strong U.S. match statistics translates to Canadian residency success.

Accreditation requirements for Canadian licensing

Provinces generally require that your MD be from a "recognized" or "acceptable" medical school. What counts as recognized varies:

  • Some provinces accept schools on the WFME-approved list
  • Some provinces maintain their own lists
  • CAAM-HP and ACCM accreditation does not automatically satisfy provincial recognition requirements

Check each province's IMG recognition criteria. The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) publishes guidance on eligibility, but provincial Colleges make final decisions.

Financing — Canadian federal loans generally do not apply

Canada's federal student loan program (through the National Student Loans Service Centre) is for studies at designated Canadian institutions. Most Caribbean medical schools are not designated by the NSLSC.

Provincial student loan rules also generally require enrollment at a designated institution. This means:

  • Canadian government student loans are typically unavailable for Caribbean programs
  • Private Canadian banks offer professional student lines of credit (e.g., Scotiabank MD Student Program, RBC Healthcare Advantage) — these are private credit products, not government loans
  • Interest rates and terms on private lines of credit differ from government loans

Research financing early, before enrollment.

Schools with Canadian student mentions in our registry

Some Caribbean schools have explicit Canadian student pages or partnerships. Our registry notes this where found:

We do not have independently verified Canadian-specific placement data for any Caribbean school. Be skeptical of any school claiming specific Canadian residency match statistics.

What to verify before enrolling (checklist)

  1. Contact the provincial College in your intended province — ask specifically about IMG eligibility and whether they recognize graduates of that specific school.
  2. Check MCC eligibility at mcc.ca — are you eligible to sit MCCQE?
  3. Confirm accreditation — does the school's accreditor meet provincial recognition criteria?
  4. Research financing — what is your financing plan if government loans are unavailable?
  5. Research CARMS IMG match rates — understand the base rate before enrolling.
  6. Talk to current Canadian students or graduates at the specific school.

Primary sources — verify directly

  1. Medical Council of Canada — eligibility
  2. CARMS — IMG information
  3. Your provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons
  4. Registry accreditation table
  5. Compare schools
